A in the Life: Visiting High Schools day

A in the Life: Visiting High Schools day

Hello world! As a participant of the web log group, we am so excited to fairly share numerous of my day-to-day experiences as an Assistant Director of Admission at USC. They often ask questions like ‘what do you do every day?’ or ‘do you must work in the summertime? when I talk to my friends and family about my task,’ i am hoping that through my additions that are monthly this weblog, you will get a much better idea of what we do each and every day as admission counselors.

Therefore allow’s focus on the present. This i woke up at the Courtyard Marriott in Vienna, VA morning. My visit that is first began 7:45 am. That may appear early for some, reasonable to others, but we can tell you, this at 7:45 am, I happened to be tired (7:45 am in VA feels like 3:45 am in CA…oy. morning) You see, my trip from Los Angeles was likely to arrive at Reagan National Airport at 3:43 pm yesterday (to be precise.) But instead, due to a cockpit that is wet (I kid you maybe not,) my flight was delayed three hours. Luckily, my very first school visit this morning constantly has coffee waiting I was especially appreciative today (Thanks Sheila! for me, and) I visit, at this school it’s a different format which consists mostly of me answering questions although I usually give about a 30 minute presentation to students when. Thankfully the students came prepared. They asked great questions and I also think we only stuttered a times that are few.

I had a while to kill before my second visit and luckily found a Peet’s Coffee on my way. We stopped for a few breakfast and a coffee refill. In a perfect world i arrive about 10 mins ahead of a call, but frequently I’m about 15 to 20 minutes early. Fortunately, my car’s atmosphere conditioning kept me cool while I consumed my bagel and drank my latte. I was also able to chat with some counselors which is always a highlight of my day today. University counselors are often filled with details about students, their schools, and usually life as a whole. It reminds me of my high school days where I invested lot of time on my counselor’s sofa.

Exactly How coffee that is many are you able to find in this image?

My visit that is third today to a school I’ve never checked out prior to. There were about eight students present and one was even wearing a USC t-shirt. This pupil, let us call him Brandon, told me about his recent stop by at campus so we’d a moment to gush over how USC that is pretty is. I like sharing common USC experiences with pupils, particularly when i am away from home.

Finally, between my third and fourth visit this early morning, I became in a position to grab a 6′ veggie delight as I drove to the next school that is high. A nice reminder of the relationships I continue to build at each school upon checking in, my picture from last year’s visit appeared in their computer.

After my fifth and visit that is final, I returned to my hotel, debriefed my time by means of records and headed to the closest Starbucks to catch up on some work. My first instinct is definitely to test my email. Oh look! I acquired a contact from Brandon thanking me personally for my visit and asking a question about something I pointed out. Love when that happens!

I am hoping to satisfy many of you as I carry on my travels! If there’s anything else you need to know about our experiences visiting your school that is high feel absolve to leave questions in the comment section and I will do my best to make contact with you soon!

Fight On!

Mythbuster: we need to show the admission counselors that USC is my top choice

The Myth: Attending college fairs, visits and tours will increase my odds of admission.

The Verdict: Not at USC.

Every late August/early September, you will find 5 or so emails in my inbox every morning with the subject ‘Introduction to USC.’ These emails usually have the same format that is general. ‘Hello Jessica- just wished to let you know I play baseball and I can’t wait to apply to USC that I go to ABC High School. I’ve always wished to be described as a learning pupil in the Marshall School of company.’ Ok great, but what am we supposed to express? Good fortune with your baseball season? Every winter, I get comparable emails with the subject ‘Update.’ Students tell me how their first semester went, they got the lead role in the springtime musical, and that USC remains their first option. Awesome, but chances are I currently saw your senior year grades (or will soon).

At USC, we do not monitor a student’s interest outside of this actual application for admission decision purposes. Going to our programs is a wonderful way to find out more about USC, but planning to an event or sending emails like those I described will not increase your chances of admission towards the college.

As admission counselors, it really is true that people are your main contact while you feel the admission process at USC and now we are content to assist you with any allow you to may require. However, pupils just benefit from reaching out to us they can’t find the answer online if they have specific questions- especially questions to which. I think students often confuse this role and make the assumption they have to e-mail us and start a conversation in order to have a shot at admission.

So how do you show us which you’re thinking about USC? Instead of investing your time emailing us with updates, it is in your best interest to utilize that time to operate on your a reaction to the application question ‘Describe your academic interest and exactly how you want to pursue them at USC.’ You should talk about specific resources and opportunities you desire to take advantage of at USC. in place of emailing us your list of tasks, fill the activity Summary out completely. A thoughtful and very carefully assembled application stands out far more than an introduction email or an invitation to coffee.

Remember that some educational schools may monitor demonstrated interest. Some colleges may expect all pupils to reach out to them, while other people may expect students into the local area to see campus. The thought of demonstrated interest varies, so you need to always ask a college if and how they track interest and if it is factored into an admission decision.

At the end of the day, we do want to see that you’re seriously considering being a student here that you casinopokies777.com are interested in USC and. The best way so that you can articulate this interest is during your application.
